Logo Design Module

As an introduction to the module I discussed the different stages to the logo design that they would be expected to produce by the end of the module. The module was to be completed within five two hour sessions throughout a week. At the beginning of each lesson colour, advertising and logo theory were shown and discussed with more practical work in the second half of the lesson. I had an example of my own work which displayed the stages involved in creating their own logos for the module.
'Naked Munch', my own work showing different steps towards a final logo design.

Colour Theory

For the first lesson we discussed colour theory and how people visually read colour and associate it to a particular meaning. We first brainstormed what different colours meant to them (red=passion, anger, danger....) and then watched particular advertisements that use colour in a particular way.

This Bravia ad for colour lcd screen televisions uses a multitude of colour paint in various real life explosions. Students can discuss how colour can be used to grab attention and how this concept worked for the product the company is trying to sell.

The colour wheel with primary and secondary colours and also showing how people percieve meaning in different colours. This can be used to discuss how advertising and signage use colour to communicate a message.

I found these religious symbols as a good starting point as an introduction to logo design.
Students can discuss how these ancient symbols communicate their identity visually.

The history of the Shell logo. I found this a helpful example of how logo's evolve

This is a great logo to get people thinking. The 'a' to 'z' arrow - everything from a to z.

Students also get a great kick out of finding the arrow in this Fed Ex logo.
