Photography

In my own practice I use photography in all stages. I find that using photography can be a great way of mapping a project or investigating something further. The results can be part of an evolving notebook or for tracing progress throughout a project. Also photography can be a piece of work in itself. In teaching photography can be introduced as a way of drawing with light. This can be done using slow shutter speeds and a darkened space. The pupils can use light and movement to 'draw' into a photograph.

Drawing with Light

I used these prepared light drawings as visual aids to introduce a project to a 2nd year class at North Presentation. We then used a darkened corner of the room and set up an SLR digital camera on a tripod. The pupils then began drawing shapes that they could see within the room using a hand held light source. I photographed the pupils movement using a slow shutter speed and the resulting photographs were then compiled together using iMovie to make a final stop motion animation.

Memory and Evidence

As a theme to a photography project I introduced the idea of capturing a memory or evidence of someone or something. Here are a couple of photographs that I took while inside a derelict block of residential flats at St. Michael's Estate. I found that the items left behind by former tenants were loaded with memory.
