Stop Motion Animation

With a first year class we explored new media through a project in photography and stop motion animation. We first looked at the work of other artists using this in their work and analysed the techniques, processes and visual elements so it would open up options in their own work. This a selection of some of the videos that I brought into class. They show how drawing, painting, use of objects and people can be used in stop animation. After discussing different examples, pupils had a background in how to approach their films.

I also showed an example of my own work and how process can be part of a story. In this video 'Shelter' a photo was taken as each piece of wood was collected and then as each piece was put in place for the construction of the shelter. It also illustrates the passing of time over the twelve hour period in which it was made.

Pupils were put into groups for the project and each pupil was given different responsibilities such as camerawork, set design, choreography, lighting etc. They first made test pieces to explore the technique and then got experience in editing; adding sound, voice, music, transitions, speed of frames and camerawork. Each group prepared for the task by storyboarding, designing their set, preparing sound and music and experimenting with light. Once the images were taken they were all involved in the editing of their film pieces. They then got to watch them projected in the classroom where they could invite their own friends at breaktime. The pupils were very proud of their work and surprised at how easily it could be done.
